About
Sheri Gee is a West Sussex, UK based artist. Her work often derives from people watching – using the everyday moments, in her non-studio time as a working mother, to influence her paintings.
Stemming from many years of life drawing, Gee has an enduring passion for depicting the figure. Aside from painting herself or her children, Gee became captivated by the solitary commuter in the rain, drawn to the passing colours of coats and umbrellas, lights and reflections. Her latest work stems from these paintings.
Painting in oil on either gesso board or canvas, the aim of Gee’s most recent series of works is to explore a subtle introspective narrative, as the artist takes the artwork beyond the original point of reference. These paintings reflect a snatched, quiet moment between the hectic responsibilities of work or motherhood. The women are enveloped, separated, by their umbrella enclosures, able to reflect and ruminate quietly.
Originally studying Illustration, since graduation, Sheri has been daily learning and growing her fine art practice.
In 2018 Sheri was selected as one of 21 finalists in the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize and shortlisted for the same prize in 2022 and longlisted in 2023. She has exhibited in the Society of Women Artists 157th Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London and has regularly exhibited with the Chelsea Art Society. In 2024 Sheri was selected to exhibit in The Sussex 2024, by The Sussex Contemporary. One of her portraits was included in the book Portraits for NHS Heroes, published in 2020 by Bloomsbury.
To extend and inform her practice, she also regularly paints with the London Plein Air Group (instagram link) and goes out plein air painting on her local Ashdown Forest.
Other life
Originally trained and working freelance as an illustrator, Sheri has developed a career as a book designer and art director, part-time. She has had essays published in books on Illustration, has juried on national and international illustration competitions, has spoken internationally about illustration and has won awards for her art direction.
